South Manchester Muslim Walking Group have made it their mission to complete all stages of the GM Ringway- seven of which have been checked off so far.
The GM Ringway is a circular walking trail around Greater Manchester from the city centre out into the surrounding countryside. Designed around existing footpaths, parks and waterways, it covers all ten boroughs of Manchester in 20 stages which adds up to around 200 miles in total. The anti-clockwise route has four broad sections, each made up of five one-day stages which are coined the 'Southern Start Up,' 'Exhilarating East,' 'Noble North' and 'Western Wind Down.'
The aim of the project is to connect residents with the city-region’s rich natural and cultural heritage. It also aims to enhance public health and reduce GM's carbon footprint by encouraging the use of public transport. We have included this by beginning and ending each stage at a train station and using car sharing as a method of transport to and from the meeting points.
The idea for the GM Ringway was conceived by keen local walker Dr Andrew Read and implemented by charities The Ramblers and CRPE. The project is also supported by National Trust, Woodland Trust, Forestry England and many more. If you would like to get involved in the organisation, they are always looking for sponsors and volunteers to help the project to grow. Or better yet; join us as we strive to complete all 20 stages over the next few months and help the GM Ringway to achieve its goal!
